the dog as dramatic protagonist

Well, sure, you could say that about Benji, Beethoven, any number of canine leading. . .uh, men?

But did you know dog drama has been around since 1790? That's when The Dog of Montargis, a play based on a true story, hit the boards. In 1806, a butcher's dog named Carlo became a star in a melodrama called The Caravan.

A theater company in Alexandria, VA revived a dog drama in 2006. Called Caesar, or the Watchdog of the Castle, it's a thrilling Gothic tale set during the Napoleonic Wars.

Ooh! Don't you want to know more? Yes you do.
