downspout bunnies

On a crag in Scotland overlooking Loch Awe in Scotland stands a late 19th century church designed to look much older than that. This is St. Conan's Kirk, designed and built by Walter Douglas Campbell in 1881-6.  And this morning I am trying my hardest to discover why his embellishments include enchanting rabbit downspouts, a barking dog, a row of owls, and a couple of stylized dolphin chairs.

Those downspouts look not only good, but also look like they would carry a satisfactory volume of water. Always a good thing in Scotland!
