Have I been living under a rock all these years? I should have read Saki's short stories a long time ago.
Saki - actually Hector Hugh Munro, 1870-1916 - was a British Edwardian writer of high style and a wit so sharp it takes a beat to feel its sting. I've gotten hold of his story collection that was published by my beloved NYRB Classics, including the fierce marvel "Sredni Vashtar." (Spoilers in link, look out.) The one I want you to discover with me today is "Tobermory," in which a household cat is taught the art of speech and shares this gift with weekend houseguests. Delicious embarrassment for all humans ensues.

Saki's one of my favorite writers, and I think "Tobermory" is sheer genius. Here was a guy who really knew cats.
