Belgian words of folk wisdom (in two languages - Flemish and French) on companion critters:

De vogels die 's morgens te vroeg schuifelen worden van de kat gepakt.
The birds which sing too early in the morning get caught by the cat.

Al wat men spaart uit zijnen mond, is voor de kat of voor den hond.
All that you spare out of your mouth is for the cat or the dog.

Koopt geen katten in zakken.
Buy no cats in bags.

Overeen komen, gelijk kat en hond.
To agree like cats and dogs.

Als de kat weg is, de muizen dansen.
When the cat is gone, the mice dance.

De krul van den staart is het fatsoen van den hond.
The curl of the tail is the finish of the dog.

Elle prendrait bien un chien avec un chapeau.
She would even take a dog with a hat (marry anybody).

Etre reçu comme un chien dans un jeu de quilles.
To be received like a dog in a game of skittles.  (Just  imagine - curator)
