a dog for your cake

This is a plaster mould for a scottie-shaped cake decoration, found in the collections of Museums Victoria (Australia).    It belonged to a pastry chef and confectioner of German origin, Karl Friedrich Muffler (1900-1996) who emigrated to Australia in 1930.  He established himself as a business owner in Melbourne, was interned as an enemy alien during the war years (being a member of the German Labour Front), and eventually became an Australian citizen.  He worked in cake decorating for most of his life.  That's a tiny encapsulation of a lot of experiences; the full object record, here, is worth the read.
