On May 9, 1884, Victor Hugo wrote what would be his last scrap of verse - about the family cat:
I bid the cat good morning;
I offer my paw, he gives me his claw;
We are good friends.

At the end of his life, Hugo was still able to focus on what was important -- cats, and friendship. That's something our human likes about the French, they know how to appreciate life.
