Thoma (German; 1839-1924) turned for inspiration to his home area in the Black Forest and local, closely observed details of nature. Stylistically he is supposed to have more in common with earlier German masters such as Cranach than with the movements of his own time. I haven't seen enough of his work to compare. Me, I just like the intimacy and warmth of this piece.
