a foxhound gazes

yale center for british art, paul mellon collection. (PD)
Circa 1760, the great British animal portraitist George Stubbs shows us a foxhound.  What's on this creature's mind, I wonder?  His face seems almost worried.  He takes his role very seriously, perhaps. That's the main reason I'm fond of Stubbs; he seemed to have great empathy and insight for his subjects.
