I've always found George Stubbs (English; 1724-1806) a sympathetic painter of the animals he immortalized. Yet I've just now realized that he never seems to record the names of the animals themselves. If we're lucky we get the name of the person connected, as in the case of this handsome creature - "Viscount Gormanston's White Dog," 1781. (That must have been Anthony Preston, the 11th Viscount.)
