This photo from the Library of Congress shows Scipio, a Saint Bernard adopted by Orville Wright in 1917.  In 1948, when Orville died, a picture of Scipio was still in his wallet.  There's a bit more about Scipio, and a lot about Orville, in this excellent blog post.

Oh, the thought of that photo in the wallet moves me. When I hear a dog owner has died, I always spare a thought for the grieving dog.

Oh, just read the blog post. Scipio was already dead. It's a grieving human, I think, to be still carrying the picture.
