deep gaze

thanks wikimedia commons (PD US)
Here's that moment when you and your dog are out in the wide world, the horizon stretching as far as either of you could wish to run, and he turns and looks at you searchingly - right before he makes a break for it.  Caspar von Reth (German, 1858-1913) had a true nineteenth-century feel for the gaze of a dog, like his fellow artist Landseer; I can't resist sending you to this find elsewhere as further example.  The piece above is an oil on panel called simply Hundeportrat (Portrait of a Dog) and dated 1893.
