That is an actual position. Of course it's volunteer -- can you imagine the bliss of being paid to play with cats? (I was a professional petsitter once; I know whereof I speak, and it's blissful all right.)
I found this delectable job title, along with others such as "Cat Kennel Hand" and "Rehomer," at the website for Battersea Dogs & Cats Home. Established in North London in 1860 as The Temporary Home for Lost and Starving Dogs, the agency has faithfully served dogs (and cats!) since then. Charles Dickens wrote approvingly of the Home's mission; Queen Victoria was its patron at one time. Some "Battersea Dogs" have gone on to most illustrious lives. Whether in the news or not, all are precious to the humans who work with them. Visit and see.
