dog signet in silver

kindest opensource permission of the v&a

This 15th century silver signet ring, thought to be from France, says "iame s'geein," thought to be a corruption of j'aime songeant, or "I love in my dreams."  Below those words?  A dog, lying down.  Who is more faithful than a dog?  Who dreams more sweetly than a dog on the grass among the wildflowers?  This piece of sympathetic magic in the form of ID / jewelry (you press a signet into wax to seal your documents) is in the hands of the Victoria and Albert Museum.
