is that a 17thc dog treat?

Look at that dog eyeball that round thing....what is that round thing?  I'm pretty sure it's a taralli, a rounded Italian breadstick that makes a good treat for for anybody, and certainly for this pup.  This is a painting from circa 1690 by Giuseppe Maria Crespi, A Lady with a Dog.
